The most satisfying part of writing this blog, and creating new recipes, is when I come up with a healthy dessert that I love. For me, eating healthy main meals is easy, but I do miss desserts. When I find a healthy version, it’s such a bonus as I can enjoy them guilt free! This healthy chocolate mousse recipe is packed with healthy ingredients and taste amazing.
There are several versions that you can create, depending on the ingredients that you have available. I’ll talk you through the basics, and then some great little additions that you can incorporate if you like….
To make a basic healthy chocolate mousse, you really only need 2 ingredients:
1 Avocado (it needs to be ripe)
2 Teaspoons Cocoa Powder
You should cut the inside of the avocado into chunks and put into a blender, adding the cocoa powder. The avocado should be fairly ripe, so that you end up with a nice smooth texture….which is what a chocolate mousse should be! Blend the ingredients together for a few minutes and, once smooth, add to the fridge, preferably for around an hour, as it tastes so much better once cooled.
Like I said, the above is the basic version. I also like to add the following:
1 Tablespoon Full Fat Greek Yoghurt
2 teaspoons Sugar Free Sweetener (Stevia, Truvia, Xylitol are great – you may have to adjust quanities depending on what you use)
0.25 teaspoon Salt (my personal favourite is this Jamie Oliver Himaylayan Salt)
These 3 really do enhance the flavour and texture of the healthy chocolate mousse, and make it seem like much more of a treat without making it unhealthy.
Finally, I wanted to talk through a couple of extras that I may add to further improve the flavour or nutrition content.
The first would be some protein powder – probably chocolate flavour – that you could add along with/instead of the cocoa powder. This obviously increases the protein content of the chocolate mousse and can improve the flavour of the resulting mousse.
I also like to add a small amount of orange essence, to basically end up with a healthy chocolate orange mousse. If you like chocolate orange flavour, then this is for you!
Finally, rather than orange essence, I also recommend adding some chilli flakes to the mixture. This may seem a little odd to some of you, but chilli and chocolate can make a great mix!…try it!
I hope you like this healthy chocolate mousse recipe. Please do give it a go, and experiment with the different flavouring options, and let me know how you get on!
